The theme year on "Moduli Spaces, Extremality and Global Invariants" will be a hub
dedicated to the study of these questions that lie at the heart of the current
developments in geometry. The program consists of eight research workshops paired
with mini-courses and several series of Aisenstadt lectures, all coordinated to
maximize constructive interactions.

Metrics whose curvature satisfies constraints (the so-called special geometries), as well as the relation between curvature and topology have been of interest since the beginning of differential geometry. More recently, such metrics have come to the fore in physical problems related to string theory. The short program will concentrate on mainstream issues of the subjects.

Underlying much of the modern theory of integrable systems such as the KP
hierarchy, as well as isomonodromic deformation problems, and their
applications to random matrices and integrable lattice/statistical systems
are various notions of a Tau-function. This function, which in a geometrical
settting is best thought of as a section of a determinant bundle over a loop
group or an infinite dimensional Grassmannian, appears in several
guises throughout work done on the subject, but a unifying picture that
places the isomonodromic tau functions within this general geometric setting
remains to be discovered. Speakers: Marco Bertola (Concordia), John Harnad (Concordia), D. Korotkin (Concordia), Vladimir Matveev (Institut de mathématiques. Université de Bourgogne and Steklov Mathematics Institute at St. Petersburg), Alexey Kokotov (Concordia, visiting professor), Yousuke Ohyama (Osaka University), Andrei Kapaev (Research Center of Innovation and Developments. St-Petersburg), Jacques Hurtubise (McGill).
